Clemson Lacrosse will finish its three-game homestand against Mercer at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The Tigers (6-1, 2-1 ACC) suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday against Duke. After getting out to an early 4-0 lead, the Blue Devils battled back. With 35 seconds left in the game, Duke scored, allowing them to take the lead for the win. Mercer (2-4) won its last contest against UC Davis, 18-11. Last season, Clemson defeated Mercer 22-10.
Abby Morrison leads the Bears' offense with a team-high 17 points off 14 goals and three assists. Five of these goals came in their victory over UC Davis. Mercer outshot its opponent 35-21, including a 31-15 shots-on-goal advantage. Most notable, though, was its defense. Midfielders Izzy Parrett and Carley Mullins each had a career-high three caused turnovers, contributing to the team total of 13. In the cage for the Bears is Kayla Casey, who has recorded 26 saves in six games for a 40.6% save percentage.
Despite their last game's result, Clemson continued to show its dominance on the field. The Tigers' offense can truly come from anywhere. Against Duke, Lindsey Marshall led the team with five goals, while Natalie Shurtleff tallied her eighth hat trick of the season. Four different Tigers have already recorded double-digit goals through seven games. Clemson is averaging 17.67 goals per game, ranking third in the nation.
Clemson’s defense is equally impressive. The program leads the ACC with a 96% clear percentage and 11.83 caused turnovers per game. Summer Agostino’s veteran leadership leads the way with 22 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Emily Lamparter is simply a brick wall. She had five saves in her first-quarter shutout against Duke. Against the Blue Devils, she defended against seven free position opportunities, allowing only one to go in. The senior has amassed 47 saves with a 46.1% save percentage.
The Tigers will be determined to reassert themselves after suffering their first loss of the season. While it’s not a conference matchup, Clemson will not be any less focused. Expect to see the program bounce back in a blaze of glory as it continues building on an already historic season.
