The Clemson Tigers softball team returned to action tonight at McWhorter Stadium for a doubleheader against Charleston Southern. Coming off a dominant 12-0 run-rule victory over Furman last night, the Tigers looked to extend their 12-game winning streak. They did just that with a 7-0 win in game one. Let’s break down how it unfolded.

Brooke McCubbin (4-2) got the start in the circle for Clemson and set the tone early with a 1-2-3 first inning.

The Tigers wasted no time offensively. Back-to-back hits from Alex Brown and Maddie Moore put runners on base. Julia Knowler grounded out to advance them into scoring position before Brown came home on a wild pitch during Macey Cintron’s at-bat. Cintron then singled to center field, scoring Moore. Sam Minish followed with a single through the right side, advancing Cintron. Aby Vieira singled to center to load the bases, but Clemson couldn’t capitalize further, as Ava Wilson reached on a fielder’s choice with Cintron thrown out at home. Marian Collins then flew out to center to end the inning, but Clemson took an early 2-0 lead.

McCubbin continued her dominance with another 1-2-3 inning in the second. Clemson went hitless in the bottom half, with Brown reaching on a walk.

The third inning saw McCubbin retire Charleston Southern in order once again. Clemson added to its lead when Minish walked, Vieira singled up the middle, and Wilson delivered an RBI single to center to score Minish. The Tigers attempted to add more, but a lineout and a baserunning miscue resulted in an inning-ending double play. Clemson led 3-0 after three innings.

Charleston Southern notched its first hit in the fourth with a triple, but McCubbin shut down the threat with two groundouts and a strikeout.

Clemson responded in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from Moore, scoring Brown. Knowler then launched a two-run home run making it her eighth of the season to push the Tiger lead to 6-0.

McCubbin continued her stellar outing with another perfect inning in the fifth.

Marian Collins added to the Tigers’ lead in the bottom of the fifth with her fourth home run of the season, making it 7-0.

Brook Melnychuk relieved McCubbin in the sixth and allowed just one hit in a scoreless frame.

Clemson threatened again in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases, but they couldn’t push across another run.

Melnychuk closed out the game in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning, securing the Tigers’ 7-0 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
