TIGERS WIN!!
Clemson Tigers Softball defeated the Marshall Thundering Herd 8-3 on Day Two of the Clemson Classic. The Tigers are now 3-0 this weekend after wins over Elon and Villanova yesterday. The game was played at McWhorter Stadium, with Clemson’s Brooke McCubbin and Marshall’s Rielly Lucas starting the contest in the circle.
Nothing Happening Early On
Neither team generated solid offense through the first two innings. In the first inning, Marshall left two runners stranded on base. During the second inning, Clemson’s shortstop Marian Collins and Alex Brown quickly handled the ground balls that came their way. Marshall’s starting pitcher, Jules King, closed out the inning with a crucial full-count strikeout on Kylee Johnson.
Offensive Breakthrough
The Tigers’ offense came to life in the third inning. After recording two outs, King walked Maddie Moore. Julia Knowler then stepped up and hit a double, bringing Moore home for Clemson’s first run. A double-barreled hit down the middle from Abby Vieira continued the scoring, and freshman Ava Wilson added a three-run home run to put the team up 5-0. Vieira, who went 3-for-3, recorded her third hit of the day with a double to center field.
McCubbin's Early Dominance
Brooke McCubbin excelled in the circle, keeping the Thundering Herd's offense scoreless for the initial five innings while recording seven strikeouts. Marshall narrowed the score to 5-3 thanks to a strong triple by Diamond Leslie and a double by Kasia Parks.
Late Inning Action
Marian Collins led off the sixth inning with a solo home run, her third of the season. Marshall’s second baseman Brooklyn Urich bobbled a ground ball hit by Haylee Whitesides, allowing her to reach first base safely. Whitesides then stole second base, and Alex Brown’s well-placed hit to right field increased the score to 7-3. Macey Cintron would come through with an RBI, scoring Brown to finish the scoring at 8-3. In the seventh inning, Marshall’s offense showed a glimmer of hope by getting two runners on base, but Macy Cintron closed out the game with her first save, securing the 8-3 victory.
Post-Game Notes
Brooke McCubbin earned the win, improving her season record to 2-2, while Marshall’s Jules King picked up her second loss of the year, Macey Cintron completed the Save. With this victory, Clemson now stands at 3-0 on the second day of the Clemson Classic, and 7-6 overall. The Tigers will face the Thundering Herd again tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. to finish the weekend.
