The Clemson Tigers Softball team faced off against the Auburn Tigers in the second game of their doubleheader at the 2025 Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational. Clemson, dressed in Regalia, took on an Auburn squad sporting all-white pinstripes in what turned into a tough battle for the Tigers from Clemson.
Early Power: Clemson Tigers Strikes First, Auburn Responds
Clemson wasted no time getting on the board as Maddie Moore launched a solo home run in the first inning to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. However, Auburn answered quickly. Brooke McCubbin took the circle for Clemson but allowed a leadoff single to Nelia Peralta. Auburn capitalized with back-to-back RBI doubles from Icess Tresvik and Anna Wohlers, giving Auburn a 2-1 advantage after the first inning.
Auburn Extends the Lead with Long Balls
Clemson faced difficulties in the top of the second, as Auburn's Chalea Clemons retired the side consecutively. In the bottom half, Auburn's Rose Roach launched a solo home run to deep center off McCubbin, extending the lead to 3-1 Auburn. Clemson's offensive struggles persisted in the third, with Clemons retiring eight consecutive batters since Moore’s first-inning home run. Auburn took advantage of the momentum, as Anna Wohlers began the bottom half with a triple. A hit-by-pitch allowed Kylie Brockman to reach base, setting up Ma’Nia Womack, who hit a three-run home run, widening the gap to 6-1 Auburn. After the home run, McCubbin left the game following 2.2 innings, seven hits, and six runs allowed, passing the ball to Reese Basinger, who halted the momentum and closed the inning without further damage.
Clemson Fights Back But Falls Short
In an effort to respond, Clemson’s offense came alive in the fourth inning. Maddie Moore started with a single, and following a Macey Cintron RBI double down the left-field line, Clemson reduced the gap to 6-2. Basinger then kept Auburn from scoring in their half, maintaining the game's competitiveness. During the fifth, Aby Vieira hit a single on the first pitch, and Alex Brown added an RBI double, narrowing Clemson's deficit to 6-3. However, Brown was tagged out attempting to advance to third, ending the rally. Basinger and the Clemson defense excelled in the bottom half, efficiently handling Auburn’s lineup, with standout plays from Taylor Pipkins at third and Marian Collins at shortstop.
Final Push Falls Short as Auburn Secures the Win
Auburn brought in SJ Guerin in the sixth inning, who allowed just one hit, a single by Macey Cintron. In the bottom half, Clemson’s Brook Melnychuk took over pitching duties after Basinger’s impressive 2.1 inning relief performance with no hits given up and one strikeout. Even with a late baserunner in the seventh inning, Guerin halted Clemson’s final attempt, securing a 6-3 win for Auburn.
