Clemson Earns Highest-Ranked Win in Program History
In their second consecutive top-25 matchup, No. 12 Clemson Lacrosse defeated No. 5 Syracuse 9-8. This marks the highest-ranked victory in program history, breaking their previous record from last weekend. The Tigers’ first-ever win over Syracuse extends their undefeated record to 5-0 (2-0 ACC), showcasing the program’s undeniable growth.
Strong Start Sets the Tone
Kira Balis won the opening draw, setting the tone for Clemson's dominance in the draw circle. The Tigers controlled possession early, winning draw controls 9-1 in the first half. Lindsey Marshall struck first with a goal at 12:42. Syracuse responded minutes later with two quick goals in a span of 15 seconds. However, the Orange were then held scoreless for the next 23 minutes.
Draw Control Dominance Leads to Offensive Opportunities
Winning the draw battle provided Clemson with more offensive chances. Lexi Edmonds and Katie Castiello both contributed goals, giving the Tigers an edge. Both teams struggled with consistency in passing, accumulating a combined 23 turnovers in the first half. Syracuse's usual offensive leader, Emma Ward, recorded a career-high five turnovers in the first two periods, exposing the inexperience of the young Orange squad. Natalie Shurtleff added a crucial goal with just 10 seconds left in the half, putting Clemson ahead 5-3.
Defensive Battle Continues in the Third Quarter
In the third quarter, both teams capitalized on power plays to add to their scores. Clemson’s defense and draw unit continued to impose their will, helping the Tigers control time of possession and maintain their lead.

Castiello quickly responded, putting Clemson back on top. However, a key defensive foul awarded Emma Ward another free position shot, which she converted to even the score at 7-7. Clemson then netted two more goals from Shurtleff and Edmonds, securing a late-game advantage. Despite a last-minute goal at 0:49 by Caroline Trinkaus to complete her hat trick, Clemson held strong to seal the victory, 9-8.
Tigers Stay Hot with Historic Start
Clemson’s overwhelming advantage in draw controls (17-4) played a pivotal role in their ability to dictate the game.
