California to Clemson, South Carolina seems to be a nice pipeline for Clemson Tigers Softball. Clemson currently has three players on the roster from California: Maddie Moore, Aby Vieira, and Madi Lardizabal, with more talented athletes set to make the cross-country journey. One standout is class of 2026 commit Jordyn Johnsen from Santa Rosa. Johnsen is a four-star infielder ranked 24th nationally according to Softball America/On3. Coming from Cardinal Newman High School, Johnsen boasts an impressive softball résumé, highlighted by her experience competing for Team USA U15, an accomplishment she will always cherish.
Early Inspiration and Athletic Beginnings
Johnsen graciously took time from her busy schedule to chat with us. Born and raised in Santa Rosa, sports have always been a part of her life. Athletes often find inspiration from their family members, and for Jordyn, that was her older brother. “The person who really got me into sports was my older brother because I always wanted to be just like him. He played baseball and basketball so I wanted to do exactly what he did,” she shared.
She started playing baseball at age four and continued for six years. At age 10, she decided it was time to "get away from the boys" and switched to softball. Johnsen wasted no time diving into travel ball, a major commitment that demands significant dedication from both players and parents alike.
Discovering Her Love During COVID
The COVID-19 period was pivotal for Johnsen’s relationship with softball. With extra time available, she discovered a deeper passion for the game. She explained, “I truly found my love for softball during COVID due to my full effort and time being put into it. My coaches really helped push me to become the best player. And from then on my love for the game continued to grow.”
More Than Just a Game for Jordyn Johnsen
As Jordyn described her journey, her passion for softball was evident. For her, the sport is more than competition. It's about growth, experiences, and opportunities that have shaped her life. “Being able to compete and play against the best competition in the country and world has let me grow into the person I am today. Softball has taken me to so many amazing places and helped me realize how lucky I am to have been given the privilege of playing this sport.”
Developing Mental Toughness
Johnsen emphasized the importance of softball in her personal growth, specifically in building confidence and social skills. The mental aspect, according to Jordyn, is the most challenging yet important. She noted, “If you don’t have the never-give-up mindset you won’t be able to make it far in softball.” This mindset aligns perfectly with the current Clemson Tigers softball team, known for their resilience.
Playing for Team USA
Playing for the country you love is a dream many athletes aspire to. Johnsen achieved this dream when selected for the Team USA U15 National Team. Reflecting on that experience, she said, “Playing for the U15 national team was a dream come true. Being able to wear USA across my chest was such an honor and something I will never forget.” Her team won two gold medals, an accomplishment she described as life-changing. “Connecting with people from all over the world who share the same passion was honestly amazing. The friendships and memories made through the USA program are irreplaceable.”
Why Clemson?
With over 2,600 miles separating Santa Rosa and Clemson, we asked Johnsen what drew her to Clemson. “Going to college across the country is something that I have always dreamed of doing. I wanted to venture out and experience something totally different than I ever had,” she explained.
When asked specifically why Clemson, she added, “Clemson was a mix of everything I was looking for. Great academics combined with amazing athletics. Clemson has an outstanding program with fantastic people at its foundation. Coach Rittman and everyone else have been so welcoming. From my first visit, I immediately could see myself as a Tiger. What truly sold me was how much Clemson supports their athletes.”
Seeing Her Future Team
The Clemson Tigers just traveled to Stanford, California, and took the series against the No. 15-ranked Cardinal. Johnsen eagerly attended and shared her excitement: “Watching the team in action was amazing! Seeing them come out on top, especially over a top-ranked team like Stanford, was awesome. It made me even more excited to be part of such a special program in the future and experience amazing wins and moments like these.”
